Simple Openwork Crochet Square

You can use squares to make blankets, pillows, table runners, scarves, cardigans, ponchos, bags and so much more. The possibilities are endless. Follow the free crochet instructions below and create something beautiful and unique!
The single color Simple Openwork Crochet Square is crocheted with red worsted yarn and a 4 mm crochet hook and the final motif measures 15 cm (5,9 inches). Each round of the multicolored Simple Openwork Crochet Square is crocheted with a different color of embroidery floss and a hook 1,5 mm. It measures 8,5 cm (3,3 inches).
Even though these two squares are made with the same pattern, below you will find different instructions for them. The first instructions are for the red square, which is worked seamlessly with a single color. The second instructions, for the multicolored square, show exactly where you have to join the new color.
Besides your yarn and hook, you will also need a needle to weave in loose ends and a pair of scissors.

Instructions
for the seamless single color Simple Openwork Crochet Square

Chain 6 and join with sl st in first ch to form a ring.

  • Round 1:Ch 3 (counts as dc), 15 dc in the ring, join with sl st in 3rd ch of first ch3. (16 dc)
  • Round 2:Ch 5 (counts as dc and ch-2 sp), * dc in next dc, ch 2; repeat from * 15 times, join with sl st in 3rd ch of first ch5.
  • Round 3:Sl st in next ch-2 sp, ch 3 (counts as dc), in same sp work (dc, ch 3, 2 dc), * (ch 2, sc in next ch-2 sp) 3 times, ch 2 **, in next ch-2 sp work (2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc); repeat from * 3 times and from * to ** once more, join with sl st in 3rd ch of first ch3.
  • Round 4:Sl st in next dc and in next ch-3 sp, ch 3 (counts as dc), in same sp work (dc, ch 3, 2 dc), * (ch 2, sc in next ch-2 sp) 4 times, ch 2 **, in next ch-3 corner sp work (2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc); repeat from * 3 times and from * to ** once more, join with sl st in 3rd ch of first ch3.
  • Round 5:Sl st in next dc and in next ch-3 sp, ch 3 (counts as dc), in same sp work (2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc), * (ch 2, dc in next ch-2 sp) 5 times, ch 2 **, in next ch-3 corner sp work (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc); repeat from * 3 times and from * to ** once more, join with sl st in 3rd ch of first ch3.
  • Round 6:Sl st in next 2 dc and in next ch-2 sp, ch 3 (counts as dc), in same sp work (2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc), * (ch 2, dc in next ch-2 sp) 6 times, ch 2 **, in next ch-2 corner sp work (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc); repeat from * 3 times and from * to ** once more, join with sl st in 3rd ch of first ch3.
  • Round 7:Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in next 2 dc, * in next ch-2 sp work (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc), dc in next 3 dc, (dc in each of next 2 chains, dc in next dc) 6 times, dc in each of next 2 chains **, dc in next 3 dc; repeat from * 3 times and from * to ** once more, join with sl st in 3rd ch of first ch3.

Fasten off and weave in loose ends.

With the first color chain 6 and join with sl st in first ch to form a ring.

  • Round 2:With right side facing, join next color with a sl st in any dc, ch 5 (counts as dc and ch-2 sp), * dc in next dc, ch 2; repeat from * 15 times, join with sl st in 3rd ch of first ch5. Fasten off.
  • Round 3:With right side facing, join next color with a sl st in any ch-2 sp, ch 3 (counts as dc), in same sp work (dc, ch 3, 2 dc), first corner made, * (ch 2, sc in next ch-2 sp) 3 times, ch 2 **, in next ch-2 sp work (2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc); repeat from * 3 times and from * to ** once more, join with sl st in 3rd ch of first ch3. Fasten off.
  • Round 4:With right side facing, join next color with a sl st in any ch-3 corner sp, ch 3 (counts as dc), in same sp work (dc, ch 3, 2 dc), * (ch 2, sc in next ch-2 sp) 4 times, ch 2 **, in next ch-3 corner sp work (2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc); repeat from * 3 times and from * to ** once more, join with sl st in 3rd ch of first ch3.
