I’ve got this awesome and super simple crochet project for you to try out – the Octagon Coaster Pattern. It’s the perfect way to put those random bits of yarn you’ve got lying around to good use. This little octagon motif is an absolute cutie and won’t take you much time or effort at all. The pattern is easy to follow and works up super quick, so you can whip up a bunch of these motifs to use however you’d like.

The sample shown was made with a 1.5 hook and some crochet thread size 10 and it turned out about 11 cm or 4.3 inches across. But you can totally play around with different yarn weights and hook sizes to get the look and size you want. How exciting!

Instructions
Make a magic ring.

  • Round 1: Ch 2 (counts as hdc), 11 hdc in the ring, pull the thread end to close the ring as much as needed, join with sl st in 2nd ch of beg ch2. (12 hdc)
  • Round 2: Ch 5 (counts as dc and ch-2 sp), * dc in next hdc, ch 2; repeat from * around, join with sl st in 3rd ch of beg ch5. (12 dc, 12 ch-2 spaces)
  • Round 3: Sl st in next ch-2 sp, ch 3 (counts as dc), 2 dc in same sp, ch 1, * 3 dc in next ch-2 sp, ch 1; repeat from * around, join with sl st in 3rd ch of beg ch3. (36 dc, 12 ch-1 spaces)
  • Round 4: Sl st in next 2 dc and in next ch-1 sp, ch 3 (counts as dc), 3 dc in same sp, ch 1, * 4 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1; repeat from * around, join with sl st in 3rd ch of beg ch 3. (48 dc, 12 ch-1 spaces)
  • Round 5: Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in next 3 dc, 2 dc in next ch-1 sp, * dc in next 4 dc, 2 dc in next ch-1 sp; repeat from * around, join with sl st in 3rd ch of beg ch3. (72 dc)
  • Round 6: Ch 1, sc in same stitch, * ch 4, skip next 2 dc, sc in next dc; repeat from * 23 times, ch 2 and join with hdc in first sc to create last ch-4 sp of the round. (24 sc, 24 ch-4 spaces)
  • Round 7: Ch 1, sc in same sp, * ch 5, sc in next ch-4 sp; repeat from * 23 times, ch 2 and join with dc in first sc to create last ch-5 sp of the round. (24 sc, 24 ch-5 spaces)
  • Round 8: Ch 1, sc in same sp, * ch 5, sc in next ch-5 sp, in next ch-5 sp work (dc, ch 3 and sl st in 3rd ch from the hook – picot made, 3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc, ch 3 and sl st in 3rd ch from the hook – picot made, dc), sc in next ch-5 sp; repeat from * around omitting the very last sc, join with st st in first sc. (64 dc, 8 ch-3 spaces, 8 ch-5 spaces, 16 sc, 16 ch-3 picots)

Fasten off and neatly weave in all loose ends.
