The word quatrefoil means “four leaves” from Old French quatre ‘four’ and foil ‘leaf’, referring specifically to a four-leafed clover, but applies in general to four-lobed shapes in various contexts.
What you’ll need
You can choose any yarn you like to crochet this square motif. Just to give you an idea of the size, with sock yarn and 2 mm crochet hook, the motif is going to be about 7,5 cm (about 3 inches).
You will also need a needle to weave in loose ends and a pair of scissors.

Instructions
Ch 10 and sl st in first ch to form a ring.
- Round 1:Ch 1, 20 sc in the ring, join with sl st in first sc.
- Round 2:Ch 1, sc in same stitch, * ch 9, skip 4 sc, sc in next sc; repeat from * 3 times, ch 9, join with sl st in first sc.
- Round 3:Ch 1, * in ch-9 sp work (sc, hdc, 11 dc, hdc, sc); repeat from * around, join with sl st in first sc.
- Round 4:Sl st in hdc, ch 1, sc in same stitch, * ch 5, skip 2 stitches, sc in next stitch; repeat from * 19 times, ch 2 and dc in first sc (counts as last ch-5 sp).
- Round 5:Ch 1, sc in same sp, * ch 5, sc in next ch-5 sp; repeat from * 19 times, ch 2 and dc in first sc (counts as last ch-5 sp).
- Round 6:Ch 1, sc in same sp, * ch 9, sc in next ch-5 sp, (ch 5, sc in next ch-5 sp) 4 times; repeat from * 3 times, ch 9, sc in next ch-5 sp, (ch 5, sc in next ch-5 sp) 3 times, ch 2 and dc in first sc (counts as last ch-5 sp).
- Round 7:Ch 1, * sc in ch-5 sp, in ch-9 sp work (8 dc, ch 5, 8 dc), (sc in next ch-5 sp, ch 5) 3 times; repeat from * around, join with sl st in first sc.
Fasten off and weave in loose ends.
